Comrade Abiodun “Aremson” Aremu, Secretary of the Joint Action Front (JAF) and a veteran labour activist, has passed away.
He reportedly died on Sunday in a suspected hit-and-run incident near his residence in Ota, Ogun State.
According to social critic and rights activist Debo Adeniran, who confirmed the incident in a Facebook post, Aremson was hit by a vehicle while returning home on Sunday evening.
In a terse statement, Adeniran wrote: “Abiodun Aremu, Aremson, is dead. Knocked down by a hit-and-run vehicle. So sad.”
He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
Aremu was a renowned Marxist organiser, socialist thinker, and one of Nigeria’s most consistent voices in the struggle for social justice, workers’ rights, and national liberation.
He served as Secretary of JAF—a coalition of pro-labour civil society groups—and was a prominent member of the Amílcar Cabral Ideological School Movement (ACIS-M).
Over the years, he played a leading role in nationwide protests against fuel price hikes, corruption, and anti-people policies.
A committed Pan-Africanist and supporter of the Cuban Revolution, Aremu drew ideological inspiration from revolutionaries such as Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, and Amílcar Cabral. These figures shaped his unwavering dedication to people-centred governance and anti-imperialist struggle.
His death marks a significant loss to Nigeria’s progressive movement, where he was respected for his ideological consistency, discipline, and courage.
Tributes have poured in from activists, academics, and labour leaders across the country, all describing him as a selfless fighter who lived—and died—for the cause of the working people.
