At least 52 people, mostly children, have died after an overloaded boat capsized near Gorau in Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The boat reportedly overturned on Thursday while transporting farmers and labourers to rice farms. Local residents said more than 70 people may have been aboard the vessel.
Most of the victims were reportedly children between the ages of 10 and 15. Rescue and recovery operations continued as authorities searched for additional victims.
The accident has renewed concerns over overcrowding, inadequate safety measures and weak enforcement of waterway regulations in Nigeria, particularly during the rainy season.
