Nigerian professional wrestler Oba Femi is the latest guest on CNN’s acclaimed programme, African Voices, where he shared his inspiring journey from a track-and-field athlete to becoming one of the rising stars in the WWE.
In the episode, CNN correspondent Larry Madowo sat down with the Nigerian wrestler to discuss how an unexpected message on Instagram opened the door to a career in professional wrestling.
According to Femi, WWE reached out to him after noticing his athletic profile and videos showcasing his strength and intensity in shot put competitions.
Reflecting on the origin of his wrestling name, Oba Femi explained that “Oba” means king, while “Femi” signifies being loved or desired. He described the name as a reflection of divine favour, saying it symbolizes someone loved by God.
The wrestler also highlighted his commitment to promoting Nigerian culture on the global stage. He said he intentionally incorporates elements of his heritage into his wrestling persona, emphasizing that Nigerians are talented and making significant contributions around the world.
Speaking about his debut on WWE’s main roster during the Royal Rumble event, Femi recalled the overwhelming support he received from fans in Saudi Arabia. He admitted he was surprised by the crowd’s familiarity with his work, having spent much of his wrestling career in WWE’s developmental brand.
I didn’t think they would know much about me, but when I heard them chanting ‘Oba’ as I entered, it was an incredible feeling,” he said.
Before relocating to the United States, Femi attended college in Lagos, where he studied visual arts while competing as a shot put athlete. He revealed that he pursued athletics with the same determination that now drives his wrestling career, aiming for success at the highest levels, including international championships and the Olympics.
Femi credited his parents for shaping his discipline and work ethic. While describing them as affectionate, he noted that they were also firm and supportive, particularly because his father had experienced similar challenges pursuing a sporting career as a basketball player.
Addressing the pressure of performing before large audiences, the wrestler said his experience in athletics taught him consistency and focus regardless of the size of the crowd.
It doesn’t matter if there are 10 people or thousands watching. You have to deliver every single time,” he said.
Looking ahead, Femi said his greatest ambition is to inspire the next generation.
“I want to be someone young people remember watching and draw inspiration from. I want to leave a lasting impact on the generation coming up,” he stated.
