A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has alleged that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has an advantage in the 2027 presidential election because of his access to public funds and government resources.
Momodu argued that the incumbent president’s control of federal government resources could give him an advantage over opposition candidates seeking to unseat him in the forthcoming election.
The media entrepreneur and politician has been vocal about the political dynamics ahead of the 2027 general election, particularly the challenges opposition parties may face in competing against an incumbent president.
His comments have also drawn attention to concerns about the influence of incumbency in Nigeria’s electoral process, including the use of government resources, access to state institutions and the ability of the ruling party to mobilise support.
Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election is expected to attract intense political competition as opposition parties consider strategies to challenge Tinubu, who is seeking another term in office.
However, the allegation that public funds could be used to strengthen the president’s re-election campaign would require evidence to establish any specific misuse of government resources. Public funds are intended for governance and public services, while electoral laws regulate the use of state resources during campaigns.
As political activities gather momentum, the conduct of political parties, the neutrality of public institutions and the enforcement of electoral regulations are likely to remain key issues in the run-up to the election.
