The 65th edition of the FirstBank Lagos Amateur Open Golf Championship will hold in November at the Golf Section of Ikoyi Club 1938, Lagos, as FirstBank of Nigeria Limited sustains its 65-year commitment to the development of golf in Nigeria.
The championship, sponsored continuously by the bank under its first@Sports initiative, marks a significant milestone in its longstanding support for sports development and amateur golf in the country.
The partnership is regarded as one of the longest-running corporate sponsorships of a golf competition in Nigeria, reflecting FirstBank’s sustained investment in sporting excellence and talent development.
Over the years, the tournament has provided a platform for emerging Nigerian and international amateur golfers to hone their skills, gain competitive experience and prepare for potential professional careers.
Recognised by the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), the championship attracts amateur golfers from across Africa and beyond, offering participants opportunities to earn valuable global ranking points.
Organisers said this year’s edition would bring together leading amateur golfers to compete on the challenging course at Ikoyi Club 1938, reinforcing the tournament’s tradition of sporting excellence, competitive golf and youth development.
At the previous edition, Babatunde Oyalami emerged champion with a three-day gross score of 231. He returned rounds of 78, 75 and 78 to finish three strokes ahead of his closest rival.
Peter Eben-Spiff also made history by becoming the first Nigerian golfer to be listed on the WAGR following his victory at the 58th edition of the championship.
The Lagos Amateur Open Golf Championship is played over 54 holes, testing participants’ consistency, technical ability and competitive resilience across three rounds.
With its continued sponsorship, FirstBank is reinforcing its commitment to grassroots sports development, providing opportunities for amateur golfers to compete at a high level and supporting the growth of golf in Nigeria.
