The Trump Administration had been pushing leaders of several African countries, including Liberia, Senegal, Mauritania, Gabon, and Guinea-Bissau, to accept migrants deported by the US. However, Nigeria has rejected the request.
According to reports, the US government had sent requests to these countries to accept migrants expelled from the US, but Liberia’s Foreign Minister, Sara Beysolow Nyanti, denied any involvement, stating, “We have not had discussions about deportees or criminals coming to Liberia.
Despite this, Trump mentioned the proposal during a meeting with the five leaders, saying, “I hope we can bring down the high rates of people overstaying visas, and also make progress on the safe, third-country agreements.
This move is part of a broader effort by the US to find countries willing to accept deportees, with at least four other African countries – Benin, Eswatini, Libya, and Rwanda – reportedly being courted by the US.
