The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has pledged to seek justice for Jennifer Elobor, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member who was assaulted by security operatives in Anambra State.
In a strongly worded statement, the NBA condemned the assault and described it as “inhumane,” calling for the prosecution of those responsible.
Signed by NBA President Afam Osigwe and National Secretary Mobolaji Ojibara, the statement commended the Anambra State Government for swiftly identifying and arresting the perpetrators but stressed that accountability must not stop at arrests.
“The NBA insists that the perpetrators must be promptly and diligently prosecuted in accordance with the law. Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done, to serve as both redress for Ms. Elobor and deterrence against future abuses,” the statement said.
The association also called for comprehensive training and reorientation of security personnel to uphold human rights and professionalism.
It urged the Anambra State Government to implement preventive mechanisms to ensure citizens are protected from abuse by security forces.
The incident, captured in a viral video, showed members of the Operation Udo Ga-Achi security outfit beating and stripping Elobor in Oba community, despite her identifying herself as a corps member. The video has sparked nationwide outrage and condemnation from the NYSC, civil society groups, and the general public.
