The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) is mourning the loss of one of its officers and two other citizens following a devastating road accident that occurred on Monday, February 23, 2026, at the Badagry Roundabout inward Seme.
The fatal crash, which involved a truck owned by the Dangote Group, has sent shockwaves across the Badagry community and reignited concerns about road safety and vehicle maintenance standards.
According to preliminary reports, the fully loaded SHACMAN truck reportedly suffered a brake failure while travelling at high speed. The driver lost control of the vehicle, which rammed into a LASTMA officer who was on duty regulating traffic at the roundabout, as well as a pedestrian nearby. The out-of-control truck continued its course, fatally striking another individual before finally coming to a halt about 200 metres from the initial impact point.
The driver fled the scene immediately after the accident but was later apprehended by other LASTMA personnel and handed over to officers at the Badagry Police Division for further investigation.
Emergency responders, including officials of LASTMA, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, police officers and concerned residents, swiftly mobilised to the scene. The victims were rushed to the General Hospital, Badagry, where they were sadly pronounced dead.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed profound grief over the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved families.
“This is a heartbreaking tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims during this extremely difficult time,” he said. “The officer who lost his life was a committed public servant who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. We honour his courage, professionalism and unwavering dedication to safeguarding lives on our roads.”
Bakare-Oki also stressed the urgent need for transport and haulage companies to prioritise vehicle maintenance, particularly braking systems, to prevent avoidable accidents.
“This tragic incident is a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of mechanical failure,” he noted. “We urge all logistics and haulage operators to implement strict and routine maintenance checks to ensure public safety.”
The accident vehicle has been impounded and handed over to the police for a comprehensive forensic investigation.
LASTMA assured residents that it will continue to collaborate with relevant agencies to ensure justice is served and to strengthen enforcement measures across Lagos road corridors. The Lagos State Government also reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing monitoring frameworks, improving emergency response systems and intensifying public awareness campaigns aimed at preventing similar tragedies.
The loss serves as a painful reminder of the risks faced daily by traffic officers and the shared responsibility required to make Lagos roads safer for all.
