Lagos Warns of Traffic Disruptions as Kara Bridge Repairs Begin on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway
The Lagos State Government has advised motorists to expect partial traffic disruptions along the Kara Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as the Federal Ministry of Works begins the replacement of the bridge’s expansion joint on Tuesday.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, saying the rehabilitation work is expected to last for two weeks.
According to him, the repair project will require the temporary reduction of the existing four-lane carriageway to two lanes over a 1.5-kilometre stretch to provide a safe working area for construction activities.
Osiyemi explained that the lane restriction is expected to cause moderate traffic congestion around the Fatgbems Turn, where some motorists may need to make U-turns or seek alternative routes to avoid delays.
He, however, assured road users travelling towards Ibadan that traffic beyond the Fatgbems Turn is expected to flow freely with minimal disruption throughout the repair period.
“The Federal Ministry of Works will commence the replacement of the expansion joint at Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, for a period of two weeks,” the commissioner said.
“Consequently, motorists are advised to expect partial traffic disruptions around the Kara axis during the repair period and are urged to exercise patience, obey traffic regulations and cooperate with traffic management officials deployed along the corridor.”
Osiyemi urged motorists to plan their journeys ahead, explore alternative routes where possible, comply with traffic regulations and cooperate with officials managing vehicular movement along the affected corridor.
He added that the Lagos State Government appreciates the understanding and cooperation of the public, noting that the rehabilitation work is designed to improve the safety, durability and long-term structural integrity of the Kara Bridge for the benefit of all road users.
