Rev. Joseph Hayab, Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, has raised concerns over the persecution of Christians in parts of northern Nigeria.
In an interview with TVC (from 4:47 mark), Hayab stated that while mosques are allowed within many university campuses in the North, churches are not permitted, describing it as clear discrimination and a form of religious persecution.
Hayab also noted that some Christian students are being denied opportunities to further their education despite excelling in their exams. He explained that when a Christian child scores high marks but is still unable to gain admission into certain universities in northern Nigeria, it amounts to another form of religious persecution.
“Those who are claiming that there is no persecution probably do not know the pains some Christians in northern Nigeria have gone through. If today, in many of the universities in northern Nigeria, you don’t have a church but you can have mosques everywhere, what do you call that? It is religious persecution. If a Christian child gets good scores and cannot go to certain universities in northern Nigeria, what do you call that? That is persecution.”
