A potentially devastating late-night fire incident was swiftly brought under control along the Secretariat inward Otedola Bridge axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, thanks to the rapid response of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday night, involved a Mack truck carrying an empty 20-foot container. According to preliminary findings, the truck suddenly caught fire while in motion, posing a serious threat to nearby motorists and critical infrastructure in the busy corridor.
Officials of LASTMA responded promptly, arriving at the scene within minutes. Their immediate priority—saving lives—was achieved as the truck driver was successfully rescued without sustaining any injuries.
Recognizing the high-risk nature of the situation, particularly around the strategic Otedola Bridge area, LASTMA operatives quickly activated emergency protocols and coordinated efforts with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service. Their combined intervention led to the rapid containment of the blaze, preventing it from escalating into a major disaster.
The swift action not only stopped the fire from spreading but also ensured that traffic flow was restored in record time, minimizing disruption for commuters and protecting economic activities along the expressway.
General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the response team for their bravery, professionalism, and calm handling of the situation. He reiterated the agency’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across Lagos roads.
Motorists have been advised to regularly inspect their vehicles and exercise caution while driving, as proper maintenance remains key to preventing unexpected incidents.
The agency reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining a safe, efficient, and well-regulated traffic system throughout Lagos State.
