The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has warned children, teenagers and young adults against using roller skate shoes, wheeled footwear and similar recreational devices on public highways and other busy roads.
LASTMA said the practice exposes users to serious and avoidable traffic hazards, particularly when they glide alongside moving vehicles, cross carriageways indiscriminately or manoeuvre through traffic without adequate protection and adult supervision.
The Authority noted that public highways are designed primarily for vehicular traffic and involve the simultaneous movement of cars, motorcycles, pedestrians and other road users.
According to LASTMA, using wheeled recreational devices in such environments can reduce users’ ability to react to sudden vehicular movements and may result in serious collisions and life-threatening injuries.
The agency therefore urged parents, guardians, schools and caregivers to discourage children and other vulnerable road users from using roller skate shoes on highways, expressways, bridges, service lanes and other areas where vehicular traffic is permitted.
LASTMA advised users of wheeled footwear to restrict skating activities to designated recreational areas, private compounds and other safe environments. It also recommended the use of protective equipment, including helmets, knee pads and elbow pads.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said road safety is a collective responsibility requiring vigilance, discipline and respect for the dangers associated with public roads.
He stressed that the protection of human life must remain paramount, adding that no recreational activity should expose individuals or other road users to unnecessary danger.
LASTMA also urged motorists to exercise greater caution around children and young people using wheeled footwear, especially in residential areas, estates and school zones where vulnerable road users may suddenly enter the traffic stream.
The Authority asked members of the public to report dangerous traffic situations, road obstructions, crashes, vehicle breakdowns and other incidents requiring urgent intervention through the LASTMA toll-free short code 3367.
LASTMA reiterated its commitment to protecting lives, promoting responsible road-user behaviour and improving traffic safety across Lagos State.
