Prominent government officials, legal practitioners, political leaders and conflict resolution experts converged in Enugu on Tuesday for the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (ICMC) 2026 Annual Lecture and Awards Ceremony, where speakers underscored the critical role of mediation in promoting peace, justice and sustainable development.
The event brought together key stakeholders from the public and private sectors to deliberate on strengthening alternative dispute resolution (ADR) mechanisms and fostering harmonious relationships across communities and institutions.
Among the dignitaries in attendance were the Executive Chairman of the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission, Prof. Chris Ngwu; representative of the President of ICMC, Chief Uchenna Anioke; Deputy National Chairman (South) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Ben Nwoye; Executive Secretary of the Enugu State Local Government Staff Pensions Board, Dr Eric Oluedo; and the Solicitor General of Enugu State, Mr Ezenwukwa Ikechukwu.
Speakers at the event stressed that mediation and conciliation remain effective tools for resolving disputes without prolonged litigation, noting that the increasing adoption of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms would help reduce the burden on courts while promoting justice, dialogue and national cohesion.
They also called on governments, institutions and community leaders to continue embracing peaceful conflict resolution strategies to strengthen democratic governance, improve industrial harmony and enhance social stability.
The annual lecture featured discussions on contemporary issues affecting governance, justice delivery and national development, while participants explored practical approaches to preventing conflicts through dialogue and negotiation.
The ceremony also recognised individuals and organisations for their outstanding contributions to mediation, public service, leadership and the promotion of peace. Award recipients were commended for their commitment to professionalism, integrity and community development.
The organisers reaffirmed ICMC’s commitment to advancing mediation and conciliation as indispensable instruments for achieving lasting peace, fostering collaboration and supporting Nigeria’s socio-economic development.
