Tragedy Strikes DICON Kaduna as Explosion Kills Two, Injures Four*
An explosion at the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) facility in Kaduna on Saturday claimed the lives of two individuals—including a military officer—and left four other workers critically injured.
The incident occurred during the production of gunpowder at the factory located in the Kurmin Gwari area of the city. The blast triggered widespread panic across nearby communities, with residents reporting that the explosion shook buildings and caused confusion in the neighbourhood.
Eyewitnesses said that the explosion took place while some employees were on a weekend shift.
“It was during the production of gunpowder—specifically, what they call primer powder. The explosion killed a military officer instantly and one civilian staff. Four others were critically injured,” a source stated.
The victims were initially taken to St. Gerard Catholic Hospital in Kakuri, located about two kilometres from the scene. They were later transferred by military ambulances to the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital for further treatment.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the cause of the explosion as investigations continue.
