Traditional rulers in Edo State, particularly in Esanland and Edo Central Senatorial District, have dropped the title ‘His Royal Highness’ (HRH) and adopted ‘His Royal Majesty’ (HRM).
Previously, only the Oba of Benin was referred to as ‘His Royal Majesty’ in Edo State.
Controversy erupted after the Secretary to the State Government, Musa Ikhilor, referred to the Okuokpellagbe of Okpella as HRM in an official statement, rather than the traditionally used HRH.
The adoption of the HRM title by traditional rulers in Esanland/Edo Central is being viewed by some as a challenge to the historical reverence exclusively accorded to the Oba of Benin.
During recent visits by political candidates to Edo Central, traditional rulers were introduced as “His Royal Majesty,” a development that has stirred public debate.
However, it has been clarified that all crown princes in Esanland/Edo Central will continue to be addressed as ‘His Royal Highness.
