Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has inaugurated the Higher Islamic College in Gajiganna, a town in the northern part of the state. The college combines traditional Almajiri education with formal education, aiming to equip students with essential knowledge and skills. This initiative is part of Zulum’s efforts to revitalize the Sangaya education system while introducing modern subjects and vocational training.
The college operates under a curriculum approved by the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS), blending Islamic scholarship with science, mathematics, technology, and foundational English.
Zulum also commissioned a secondary school in Gajiganna, which will serve as a referral center for hundreds of pupils completing primary education.
The governor emphasized the need to promote education in northern Borno, which has suffered devastation from over a decade of insurgency.
Zulum directed the provision of one square meal per day to students in high Islamic colleges and schools with low enrollment to boost enrollment.
The governor approved stipends of N250,000 for fathers and N50,000 for mothers of students in these schools, as well as N50,000 for each student to support their essential needs.
The Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Engr Lawan Abba Wakilbe, commended Zulum for delivering over 104 mega schools in six years, with 35 more under construction.
Wakilbe praised Zulum’s vision, leadership, and commitment to education, highlighting the impact on future generations.
