The Obamoro family of Iga-Obamoro Ilufun, Ijana Quarters in Ota, Ogun State, on Thursday held a grand celebration in honour of their revered patriarch, Obamorolugbe Obamoro, who settled in Ota and became a prominent ruler over 300 years ago.
Speaking to reporters, Prince Babatunde Opeifa, head of the Obamoro family, described Obamoro as a powerful and visionary leader who played a key role in the development of Ota as a major trade hub during the transatlantic slave trade era. He noted that Obamoro established trading outposts extending as far as Badagry.
“Our great patriarch, Obamorolugbe Obamoro, was a king of immense influence and prosperity. He commanded great respect and wealth, using barter trade to acquire European goods, build structures, expand business ventures, and lead successful military campaigns,” Prince Opeifa said.
He added that Obamoro’s spiritual presence continues to guide and protect the family. “Even in death, he provides us with wisdom and victories—especially in legal battles concerning our ancestral lands. He has remained a faithful guardian to his descendants.”
Prince Opeifa, popularly known as ‘Justice of Peace (JP)’, affirmed the family’s inalienable right to the traditional stool in Ota. However, he clarified that the family has no dispute with the current Olota of Ota, Oba Abdulkabir Obalanlege, acknowledging his selection as divinely ordained and supported by the family.
The celebration began in the morning with family members from across Nigeria and the diaspora gathering at Obamoro’s tomb. Traditional rites were performed, including the pouring of libations, spiritual chants, drumming, and dancing—all aimed at invoking his spirit.
Musbau Salisu, a descendant and chief priest of the family, noted that this was the fourth major ceremony held in honour of Obamoro. He said the event continues to unite family members from around the world in remembrance and celebration of their heritage.
