Oba Sikiru Adetona, the revered Awujale of Ijebuland, passed away on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91, marking the end of an era in Nigerian traditional leadership. His demise occurred just hours after the announcement of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s death, with whom he shared a long-standing friendship.
Early Life and Reign
Born on May 10, 1934, in Imupa, Ijebu-Ode, Oba Adetona hailed from the Anikinaiya Ruling House. He studied Accountancy in the United Kingdom before ascending to the throne on April 2, 1960, at just 26 years old. His reign spanned over 64 years, making him one of Nigeria’s longest-serving monarchs ¹.
