On Saturday, Abuja played host to Nigeria’s elite as family, friends, and political associates of former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, gathered to celebrate the wedding of his eldest son, Dr. Chikampa Amaechi, and his bride, Anita Nwabueze.

Dignitaries in attendance included former First Lady, Dr. Patience Jonathan; Dolapo Osinbajo, wife of former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; former Senate President, David Mark, and his wife Helen; as well as former PDP National Chairman, Chief Uche Secondus.
Others in attendance included the Chairman of Vanguard Newspapers, Sam Amuka Pemu; former Rivers State Governor, Celestine Omehia; former Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong; Senator Olorunnimbe Mamora; former Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Chief (Mrs.) Amal Pepple; former Director General of NIMASA and Vanguard columnist, Dr. Dakuku Peterside; and Senator Lee Maeba, among others.
The event, which took place at St. Gabriel’s Chaplaincy, Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, also featured several clergymen in attendance.
The first Bible reading was taken from Genesis 2:18–24, where the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make a helper suitable for him…” This passage emphasized the divine foundation of marriage.
The second reading, from 1 Corinthians 13:1–13, focused on the enduring power of love — highlighting that true love is patient, kind, and capable of overcoming all challenges.
The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Most Reverend Ignatius Kaigama, in his brief remarks during the ceremony, admonished the newlyweds to continually invite God into their union and make Him the center of their home.
He encouraged the couple to work together to ensure their marriage lasts even longer than those of their parents — which have each endured over three decades. The groom’s parents have been married for 32 years, while the bride’s parents have enjoyed 34 years of marriage.
In a light-hearted moment that drew prolonged laughter from the congregation, Archbishop Kaigama, while acknowledging the presence of dignitaries, humorously referenced former First Lady Patience Jonathan’s famous remark: “There is God o!”
Earlier, the officiating priest, Father Steve — who has served as the Amaechi family’s priest over the years — urged the couple not to allow their marriage to become part of the growing statistics of failed unions.
“In our first Bible reading today, we see how much God loves us by creating us from nothing. That same sacrificial love is what you must show to each other,” he said.
He emphasized, “They have come to tell the world today that divorce is not part of their vocabulary.”
Citing a recent study, he noted that three out of every ten marriages end in divorce, urging the couple to walk with God daily to ensure they do not fall into that percentage.
Guests later proceeded to the Angels Event Centre, Ahmadu Bello Way, Kado, Abuja, for a lively and elegant reception.
