The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government of Nigeria to address unresolved issues affecting university lecturers and the education sector at large.
The ultimatum followed a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at the University of Abuja.
In a statement signed by ASUU National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, the union expressed deep concern over the government’s continued neglect of the university system and its failure to implement previously agreed terms.
“At the NEC meeting held at the University of Abuja on September 28, 2025, the Union decried the persistent neglect of the university system and the government’s refusal to meet its longstanding demands,” the statement read.
“Accordingly, ASUU has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to address these issues. If, at the end of this period, no substantial action is taken, the Union may be forced to embark on a two-week warning strike, which could be followed by a total and indefinite strike.”
It will be recalled that the Federal Ministry of Education had set up a committee, chaired by the Permanent Secretary, Abel Enitan, to engage with ASUU on its demands. However, as of the time of this report, the committee’s recommendations have not been made public.
ASUU’s key demands include the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, adequate revitalisation funding for universities, payment of outstanding salary arrears, and the establishment of a sustainable funding model for tertiary education.
