Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria on Friday staged a rally in Abuja to mourn Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
The demonstration, held at the National Mosque, coincided with the global observance of Quds Day and attracted thousands of Shiite faithful. Participants carried banners and chanted slogans condemning Israeli actions in Palestinian territories.
Security was heightened across parts of the capital ahead of the rally, with the United States Embassy temporarily shutting operations amid fears of unrest. However, organisers said the protest ended peacefully without clashes with security operatives.
Similar demonstrations were also reported in Bauchi State, where movement leaders described the activities as part of longstanding Quds Day observances aimed at expressing solidarity with Palestinians and support for Iran.
Residents, meanwhile, reported heavy traffic along the Nyanya–Mararaba axis due to security checkpoints mounted following the rally.
