Shades of Life Foundation has successfully concluded the third edition of its flagship Ride4Autism West Africa 3.0, covering more than 420 kilometres from Lagos, Nigeria, to Benin Republic and back to raise awareness and promote inclusion for people with autism and other developmental disabilities.
Themed “Embracing Difference,” the cross-border cycling campaign brought together cyclists who endured challenging terrains and weather conditions while engaging communities, schools and organisations along the route.
The initiative focused on increasing public understanding of autism, encouraging early identification and promoting acceptance and inclusion across West Africa.
During the ride through Cotonou and Ouidah in Benin Republic, the Foundation held a #KnowTheSigns awareness campaign at Brèsil Public Primary School, Ouidah. The cyclists engaged teachers, parents and community leaders on the early signs of autism and the importance of seeking timely professional and therapeutic support.
“Our visit to Brèsil Public Primary School, Ouidah, was a reminder that awareness begins at the grassroots level.
Teachers and parents are the first line of support for children, and by empowering them with knowledge, we are building a future where no child is left behind,” said Dr. Eziafakaku Nwokolo, Founder of Shades of Life Foundation.
The Foundation also emphasised the important role schools play in identifying developmental differences early.
Teachers were equipped with information to support children, while parents were encouraged to seek appropriate medical and therapeutic assistance without fear of stigma.
The school engagement was welcomed by teachers and parents, with teachers pledging to incorporate autism awareness into their classrooms.
Dr. Nwokolo, who is also Founder and CEO of Shades of Life Care Limited and Shades of Life Foundation, described the initiative as more than a cycling event.
“Ride4Autism West Africa is more than a cycling event; it is a movement of hope, resilience, education, and advocacy,” she said. “By riding across borders, we remind society that autism knows no boundaries, and neither should compassion and inclusion.”
She added that the #KnowTheSigns campaign was designed to equip parents and educators with the knowledge needed to recognise autism early and provide appropriate support.
Upon returning to Lagos, the cyclists concluded the campaign with a visit to Lakowe Lakes Golf and Country Club, where the 7th Play With Stephen Golf Tournament was held. The tournament raises awareness and funds for organisations supporting people with autism across West Africa.
The successful completion of Ride4Autism West Africa 3.0 further demonstrates Shades of Life Foundation’s commitment to expanding autism awareness, empowering families and promoting inclusive communities where children and adults with autism can reach their full potential.
