The United States Department of the Treasury has announced that its Assistant Secretary for Terrorist Financing, Jonathan Burke, will visit Nigeria from February 23 to 24 as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation on countering terrorist financing.
According to the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Burke’s visit is aimed at deepening collaboration with the Nigerian Government to curb the flow of funds that support terrorist activities. The trip forms part of the Trump Administration’s broader strategy to reduce violence against Christians and other vulnerable groups affected by extremist attacks.
During his stay, Burke is expected to hold meetings with senior government officials as well as key private sector stakeholders. Discussions will focus on identifying and addressing risks within the financial sector that could be exploited for terrorist financing.
The engagement will also explore practical steps to strengthen financial safeguards, enhance intelligence sharing, and improve regulatory frameworks to prevent illicit financial flows. U.S. officials say the visit underscores Washington’s commitment to supporting Nigeria in tackling terrorism and promoting greater financial transparency and security.
Nigeria has faced persistent security challenges linked to extremist groups, making international cooperation in disrupting financial networks a critical component of counter-terrorism efforts.
