In a significant development, the US State Department has given the green light for a potential sale of ammunition, precision bombs, and precision rockets to Nigeria, valued at an estimated $346 million. This approval, announced by the US Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), is designed to bolster Nigeria’s security and counter-terrorism efforts.
The approved package includes a range of advanced military equipment, such as:
1,002 MK-82 general-purpose 500 lb bombs, capable of delivering precision strikes against enemy targets
1,002 MXU-650 Air Foil Groups for 500 lb Paveway II GBU-12 precision guidance systems, enabling Nigerian forces to accurately target and engage enemy positions
5,000 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System II (APKWS II) all-up-rounds, each consisting of a guidance section, high-explosive warhead, and rocket motor, providing a highly effective solution for precision strikes
In addition to the military hardware, the sale also includes technical, engineering, and logistics support from the US government and contractors. This comprehensive support package will ensure that Nigerian forces are equipped to effectively utilize the new equipment and maintain it over time.
The sale is expected to significantly enhance Nigeria’s capability to meet current and future threats, particularly in counter-terrorism operations and efforts to curb illicit trafficking within the country and across the Gulf of Guinea. The US government believes that this sale will support Nigeria’s security and stability, while also promoting regional peace and security.
The principal contractors for this deal are major US defence companies, including Lockheed Martin, RTX Missiles and Defence, and BAE Systems. These companies will work closely with the US government to deliver the approved package and provide ongoing support to Nigerian forces.
While the estimated cost of $346 million may vary depending on Nigeria’s final requirements, budget authority, and signed sales agreements, this sale marks a significant step forward in the US-Nigeria defence partnership. The US government is committed to supporting Nigeria’s security and stability, and this sale is a key part of that effort.
