Yetunde B. Oni, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Union Bank of Nigeria
The Daily Torch Media:
Confidence does not always come before opportunity. More often than not, it comes after we have taken the first courageous step.
This was the central message shared by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Union Bank of Nigeria, Yetunde B. Oni, in a leadership reflection where she encouraged individuals to stop waiting for the “perfect moment” and instead embrace opportunities, even in the face of uncertainty.
Drawing from her personal and professional journey in banking, Oni noted that many talented people often hold themselves back because they believe they are not fully prepared for greater responsibilities.
According to her, true confidence is built through experience, learning and resilience rather than certainty.
She urged professionals, especially women, to apply for leadership roles, compete for opportunities and remain visible, stressing that even unsuccessful attempts help build competence and prepare individuals for future success.
Leadership Sets the Tone
Oni emphasised that effective leadership extends beyond policies and strategies, noting that organisational culture is shaped by the daily actions, decisions and values demonstrated by leaders.
She stressed the importance of creating psychologically safe workplaces where employees can freely share ideas, ask questions, provide honest feedback and learn from mistakes without fear of intimidation or retaliation.
According to her, organisations thrive when leaders encourage openness, fairness and mutual respect.
Integrity Above All
The Union Bank CEO identified ethics and integrity as the foundation of sustainable leadership, saying competence alone is insufficient without trust.
She maintained that while technical skills can be acquired over time, integrity remains the defining quality that enables leaders to inspire confidence and build strong institutions.
Oni added that leadership should always be viewed as a responsibility rather than a position of personal power.
Redefining Success
Reflecting on her career, Oni said her definition of success has evolved beyond professional achievements to include family wellbeing, meaningful relationships and making a positive impact on society.
She also encouraged professionals to prioritise rest, maintain healthy boundaries and avoid postponing happiness until they attain career milestones.
According to her, sustainable leadership requires balance, self-awareness and the courage to seek help when necessary.
Empowering Women to Lead
Speaking about her engagement with colleagues through Union Bank’s women employee network, weHub, Oni highlighted the need for women not only to occupy seats at decision-making tables but also to have the confidence and support to contribute meaningfully.
She urged leaders to identify and nurture talent, create opportunities for emerging professionals and actively encourage capable individuals to step into leadership positions.
She particularly encouraged women to overcome self-doubt by applying for opportunities and allowing experience to strengthen their confidence.
Building a Lasting Legacy
Oni said the legacy she hopes to leave at Union Bank is one built on empowerment, accountability, trust and excellence.
She envisioned a workplace where employees feel valued, supported and inspired to contribute their best while fostering an institution prepared for future challenges.
“The future belongs to those who show up,” she concluded, encouraging individuals to act with courage, integrity and purpose rather than waiting until every doubt disappears.
