Hundreds of traders at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex on Wednesday shut down business activities to protest an alleged plan by authorities to take over the management of the facility.
The protest disrupted commercial activities at the major trading hub along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway, as traders locked their shops and gathered in groups to express concerns over the proposed move.
Several sections of the complex, including the popular ASPANDA Market, were affected as the usually busy market remained largely quiet.
Traders argued that the complex is a federal government property and insisted that any plan to restructure its management must involve proper consultation with stakeholders. They also raised fears that a new arrangement involving state and local authorities could introduce additional levies and taxes.
Amid the tension, Nigeria’s Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Jumoke Oduwole, visited the complex to engage traders and appealed for calm while efforts continue to resolve the dispute and restore normal business activities.
