The Presidency says Nigeria is close to finalising a constitutional framework for the establishment of state police, following months of consultations between the Executive, National Assembly, and security agencies.
Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, disclosed this after a meeting at the State House, Abuja, saying the proposal has now reached an advanced stage requiring constitutional amendment and subsequent enabling laws.
He noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed the process as part of efforts to strengthen internal security and improve local policing capacity across the country.
Gbajabiamila said discussions have moved beyond whether state police is needed to how it will be legally and operationally structured.
