A 20-year-old man, Kevin Marin, has been arrested in Santa Teresa, Texas, for allegedly shooting his mother 11 times while she slept in their family home. At the time of the incident, four other family members, including a child, were reportedly asleep in the house.
The tragic event occurred on Monday, October 13. According to local authorities, Sunland Park police responded to an emergency call reporting a shooting at a residence on Ashwood Drive. Upon arrival, officers found Marin’s mother severely wounded, bleeding heavily in the hallway just outside his bedroom.
She was immediately transported to Transmountain Hospital in El Paso and later transferred to the University Medical Center. Medical officials confirmed she had sustained 11 gunshot wounds and placed her on life support. Her condition was described as critical.
Marin was taken into custody and is currently being held at the Doña Ana County Detention Center. Prosecutors are seeking to detain him without bond under New Mexico’s pretrial detention statute.
According to reports by KTSM, the shooting occurred around 3 a.m. Marin’s brother, who was in the house, said their mother had earlier taken Kevin to his room to comfort him. Hours later, gunshots rang out, waking the brother, who rushed to find their mother gravely injured and quickly transported her to the hospital.

Investigators found multiple shell casings from a semi-automatic rifle in Marin’s bedroom, two bullet holes on the west-facing exterior of the house, and a bloody shoe print with blood droplets under a Jeep parked in the driveway.
Another woman who was in the house during the shooting told police she returned to find Marin calmly sitting on the living room couch.
Marin was arrested and charged with aggravated battery and attempted murder. Records show he has a prior criminal history, including a 2023 arrest for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and drug-related charges. After posting bail in March, his court date for the 2023 case is set for February 6, 2026.
He remains in custody at the Doña Ana County Detention Center, as prosecutors seek to deny him bail under New Mexico’s pretrial detention law.
