The Senate on Tuesday urged Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, to withdraw his call for a United Nations investigation into the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, warning that such comments could undermine ongoing efforts by the Federal Government and security agencies to combat insecurity.
The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, on the successful rescue of the 45 abducted victims after 56 days in captivity. During the debate, Senators Adams Oshiomhole and Aniekan Bassey criticised Makinde’s demand for a UN-led probe.
The Senate commended President Bola Tinubu and security agencies for the successful July 10 rescue operation, which led to the release of the victims, the arrest of eight suspected terrorists and the killing of several others.
Lawmakers also paid tribute to security personnel who lost their lives during the operation and called on the Federal Government to promptly pay their benefits while improving the welfare, training and equipment of security agencies.
The Senate further urged security forces to sustain operations against kidnappers and terrorists and secure the release of other Nigerians still held captive across the country.
