A popular entertainer, Mrs. Nwandinma Dickson, widely known as “Nwayi Garri,” tragically slumped and died on Monday during a performance at the annual August Meeting held in Ugwunagbo Local Government Area of Abia State.
The 65-year-old performer, born on October 1, 1960, hailed from Oza Umuebukwu in Nneji Autonomous Community, Ugwunagbo LGA. She was scheduled to participate in a dance and drama performance at the high-profile event, reportedly organised by the wife of the Abia State Governor, Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti.
Dressed in her signature costume, Mrs. Dickson moved from canopy to canopy, greeting guests and entertaining with her usual theatrical dance steps, while awaiting the arrival of the governor’s wife.
Eyewitnesses said that during her display, she suddenly stooped and then collapsed. At first, the crowd believed it was part of her act and continued clapping, unaware of the seriousness of the situation.
A witness recounted that at a point, she stood still, and people kept clapping, thinking it was part of her routine. But when she didn’t move again, people approached her and found she was foaming at the mouth.
The Mayor of Ugwunagbo LGA reportedly rushed her to a nearby hospital in his vehicle, but she was pronounced dead on arrival by medical personnel.
