The Nigeria Police Force has announced disciplinary action against officers involved in the fatal shooting of Mr. Mene Ogidi, which occurred on April 26, 2026, in Effurun, Delta State.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid.
According to him, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, had earlier ordered the immediate withdrawal of all personnel linked to the incident from the Delta State Command to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for investigation and disciplinary review.
Following the conclusion of internal proceedings by the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC), it was established that the principal officer involved, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman, violated established rules governing the use of firearms, as outlined in Force Order 237 and other operational guidelines.
“The officer’s conduct amounted to a serious violation of professional standards and the ethical duty of protecting life,” the statement noted, describing the actions as unlawful and unacceptable within the police institution.
Based on its findings, the FDC recommended the dismissal of ASP Usman along with other officers found culpable. The recommendations have been approved by the Inspector-General and forwarded to the Police Service Commission for final ratification in line with due process.
The police further stated that upon completion of administrative procedures, the affected officers would be handed over to appropriate judicial authorities for prosecution over their alleged roles in the extrajudicial killing.
Reaffirming the Force’s stance, the Inspector-General emphasised a zero-tolerance policy for abuse of power and unlawful use of firearms.
“No officer is permitted to take life outside the boundaries of the law. Any breach of this principle will attract both disciplinary and criminal consequences,” the statement added.
The police leadership also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, acknowledging the pain caused by the incident and assuring that justice would be pursued to its logical conclusion.
The Force urged members of the public to remain calm, reiterating its commitment to accountability, professionalism, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
