Former Governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has, through his legal counsel, issued a formal letter of demand to Mr. Kenneth Okonkwo following remarks made during a live television broadcast.
The letter, dated June 9, 2026, was signed by Chief Alex Ejesieme, SAN, of Alex Ejesieme (SAN) & Co (Madiba Chambers).
According to its contents, the action arises from statements allegedly made by Okonkwo on June 8, 2026, during an appearance on Channels Television’s programme, Sunrise Daily.
The interview was later reported by several media outlets under headlines such as “Kenneth Okonkwo Criticises Peter Obi, Condemns NDC Primaries”.
Obi’s legal team described the statements as false, malicious, and damaging to his reputation.
In the broadcast, Okonkwo was quoted as alleging, in substance and effect, that Obi, alongside leaders of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the South-East, informed aspirants seeking to contest seats in the House of Representatives that, after paying the prescribed expression of interest fee, they were required to pay an additional bribe of ₦10 million to the party and its caucus leaders.
The legal letter described the allegation as entirely fabricated and defamatory, asserting that it has caused harm to Obi’s personal integrity, public image, and reputation.
