Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Monday led a group of protesters to the National Assembly complex in Abuja, calling for urgent electoral reforms, with particular emphasis on the approval of real-time electronic transmission of election results from polling units.
The protesters, drawn from across civil society and led by Obi alongside prominent activist Aisha Yesufu, gathered at the parliamentary complex chanting solidarity songs and demanding transparency and credibility in Nigeria’s electoral process.
Operating under the banner “Occupy National Assembly,” the demonstrators converged to register their opposition to the Senate’s position on the Electoral Amendment Bill, especially the decision to remove provisions that mandate electronic transmission of election results.
The protest attracted a broad coalition of civil society organisations, youth groups, and persons with disabilities, all united by a shared demand for a transparent, technology-driven, and credible electoral system.
According to the protesters, the full-scale electronic transmission of election results remains critical to curbing electoral malpractice and restoring public confidence in democratic processes.
However, access to the National Assembly was blocked as security operatives shut the gates of the complex, preventing Obi and other demonstrators from gaining entry.
As of the time of filing this report, the protesters had commenced a march from the Federal Secretariat toward the National Assembly, pressing forward with their demands despite heightened security restrictions.
