Osun State has recorded significant progress in climate governance, rising from 30th position in 2024 to 6th place in the 2025 Subnational Climate Governance Performance Ranking Report.
The report—an initiative of the Federal Government of Nigeria, supported by the Society for Planet and Prosperity (SPP)—evaluated the implementation of climate policies, institutional frameworks, and local climate action across Nigerian states.
According to a statement released on Tuesday by Mallam Olawale Rasheed, spokesperson to Governor Ademola Adeleke, Osun also emerged as the second-best performing state in the South-West region.
Rasheed noted that Governor Adeleke’s administration has made climate change, circular economy, renewable energy, and environmental sustainability a core pillar of governance. Key initiatives include increased budgetary allocation to climate-related projects, the establishment of a Department of Climate Change and Renewable Energy, and the integration of climate education into schools.
He added that the state’s improved online visibility in climate governance reflects growing transparency and public engagement in environmental programs.
The statement read:
“This report provides a comprehensive assessment of how Nigerian states are implementing climate policies, strengthening institutional frameworks, and driving local climate action. It serves as a key tool for accountability, innovation, and collaboration toward achieving a sustainable and resilient future for all Nigerians.
“In this 2025 edition, Osun State achieved a total score of 265, marking an exceptional leap from 30th position in 2024 to 6th position—and emerging as the second-best performing state in the South-West region after Lagos State.
“This remarkable improvement underscores the vision and strategic investments of His Excellency, Senator Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke, Executive Governor of Osun State, whose administration has made climate change, circular economy, renewable energy, and environmental sustainability a core pillar of governance and development.”
The award was received by the Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Hon. Mayowa Adejoorin, who was accompanied by the Director of Climate Change and Renewable Energy, Professor Chinwe Obuaku-Igwe, at the unveiling event held at Bon Hotel Octagon, Abuja.
Furthermore, the commissioner dedicated the achievement to the people of Osun State and Governor Adeleke, acknowledging his commitment to environmental sustainability and climate action, while also commending Professor Obuaku-Igwe for her leadership and strategic coordination.
Osun State reaffirmed its commitment to advancing climate action, renewable energy transition, and sustainable development for a greener and more resilient future.
