Future Perspectives, in partnership with its development and policy division, the Africa Centre for Future Perspectives, and in collaboration with Nigeria’s immediate past Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, is undertaking a comprehensive multi-sectoral evaluation aimed at addressing health financing and climate adaptation challenges in Africa.
The initiative seeks to generate robust evidence, enhance public awareness, and inform strategic policy directions on health financing and climate adaptation across selected African countries.
Osinbajo, a strong advocate of climate justice and sustainable development, will lead the initiative across five West African nations — Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, and Sierra Leone. The effort is aimed at promoting domestic health financing solutions that can strengthen African health systems in the face of growing climate-related challenges.
Governments across Sub-Saharan Africa are under increasing pressure to reinforce their health infrastructure while grappling with rising debt burdens and recurring climate-induced shocks. These challenges have contributed to worsening food insecurity, an increase in vector-borne diseases, and mounting pressure on already fragile health systems.
As the former Vice President previously noted, “The impact of climate change will be different across key regions and groups. The poor and vulnerable, largely in developing economies, will be the first to suffer and the worst hit by the effects of climate change. These multiplier effects can be seen across other sectors, from health to shelter and security.”
The situation underscores the urgent need for coordinated multi-sector responses and innovative health financing strategies capable of building resilience across the continent.
As part of the initiative, Osinbajo will convene an inaugural high-level consultation in Sierra Leone from March 11 to 13, 2026, alongside the country’s President, Julius Maada Bio, who currently serves as the Chair of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government under Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
He will also facilitate discussions with senior ministers and national leaders whose portfolios are critical to advancing climate-health financing efforts across the region.
The consultations are expected to shape new policy frameworks and strengthen collaboration between governments, development partners, and the private sector in tackling the intersection of climate change and health financing in Africa.
