The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun I Command, has intercepted four live pangolins during a patrol operation along the Yemoamota–Igboora axis of Ogun State.
The seizure, which took place in the early hours of Thursday, February 12, 2026, followed credible intelligence received by Customs officers. Acting swiftly around 3:00 a.m., the patrol team intercepted a motorcycle along the Yemoamota–Abule-Igboora and Ebute Igboora corridor. A search of the motorcycle led to the discovery of four live pangolins hidden inside wire mesh cages and concealed in a sack.
According to the Command, the method of concealment suggested the involvement of an organised wildlife trafficking syndicate.
The suspects reportedly fled into the surrounding terrain under the cover of darkness, abandoning both the motorcycle and the endangered animals to evade arrest.
In line with global conservation protocols, particularly the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), the rescued pangolins were formally handed over to the Wildlife Conservation Centre on February 13, 2026, to ensure their proper care and rehabilitation.
Speaking on the development, the Acting Customs Area Controller of Ogun I Command, Comptroller Oladapo Afeni, commended the officers for their courage and professionalism during the covert operation. He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to combating trans-border crimes and dismantling networks involved in the illegal trade of endangered species.
Afeni also issued a stern warning to wildlife traffickers, stressing that the Command remains battle-ready and fully equipped to track down and prosecute individuals engaged in unlawful activities.
The interception marks another significant step in ongoing efforts by the Nigeria Customs Service to curb wildlife trafficking and strengthen border security.
