Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo has unveiled a renewed urban renewal agenda for Nnewi, signalling his administration’s determination to revive dormant public assets and restore the city’s status as a leading industrial and commercial hub in Anambra State.
The governor made this known during an extensive inspection tour of key locations across the city, aimed at identifying infrastructure challenges and underutilised public facilities that have hindered Nnewi’s growth and economic potential.
The tour focused on several strategic sites, including the Nkwo Nnewi Triangle, where a shopping complex has remained abandoned and unfinished for nearly 17 years. Expressing concern over the prolonged neglect of the facility, Soludo vowed to ensure its restoration and productive use.
“It is unacceptable that public assets intended to drive commerce have been left to rot for nearly two decades,” the governor said. “We are here to draw a line in the sand. This facility will no longer be a monument to neglect; we are moving swiftly to restore it to productive use for the benefit of the people of Nnewi.”
The governor also inspected the Post Office area and the High Court premises, stressing the need to integrate these legacy facilities into a modern urban development framework that would improve accessibility and enhance public service delivery.
As part of the visit, Soludo assessed potential locations for housing projects, noting that quality residential infrastructure is crucial to supporting the city’s growing workforce and sustaining its competitiveness as a major commercial centre.
He further disclosed that the state government is mapping underutilised open spaces across the city for redevelopment into public parks, recreational centres, and commercial facilities.
“Our strategy is simple: we are unlocking the hidden value of Nnewi,” Soludo said while interacting with local stakeholders. “By converting dormant spaces into vibrant public parks and productive facilities, we are not just fixing buildings; we are stimulating local commerce and reclaiming Nnewi’s rightful place as the premier industrial nerve centre of the region.”
The governor expressed optimism that visible construction and redevelopment activities would commence within the coming weeks as part of the administration’s broader effort to transform Nnewi into a modern, efficient and economically vibrant city.
The inspection tour was attended by the Commissioner for Works, Arch. Okey Ezeobi; Commissioner for Housing, Architect Henry Arinze; Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi; and the mayors of Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo Local Government Areas, among other government officials.
