The Nigerian military on Wednesday conducted a solemn burial ceremony for a senior army officer and several soldiers who lost their lives in an હુમ attack by insurgents, paying tribute to their courage, sacrifice, and unwavering service to the nation.
The remains of the late Brigadier General Oseni Braimah, Captain Ismail, and other personnel were laid to rest at the Maimalari Cantonment Cemetery in Maiduguri, Borno State. The ceremony was marked by full military honours, reflecting the nation’s appreciation for their ultimate sacrifice.
The burial drew a large gathering of military personnel, government officials, family members, and well-wishers, all of whom came to pay their last respects. Among the dignitaries present were Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, as well as the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Army Staff, and other top-ranking officers of the Armed Forces.
During the ceremony, the fallen officers were honoured with traditional military rites, including the presentation of flags and the sounding of the last post. These symbolic gestures underscored the deep respect and gratitude the nation holds for its fallen heroes.
In their tributes, dignitaries described the deceased as brave and dedicated servicemen who stood firm in the face of danger. They noted that their commitment to duty and their willingness to lay down their lives for the country would not be forgotten.
Prayers were offered for the repose of their souls, while official citations highlighting their distinguished service records were presented to their families. The atmosphere was one of both pride and profound grief, as loved ones mourned their loss while taking solace in the honour accorded to them.
In a statement shared on its official Facebook page, the Nigerian Army described the ceremony as deeply emotional and reflective.
“In a solemn and emotionally charged ceremony, the nation on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, laid to rest late Brigadier General Oseni Braimah, Captain Ismail, and other gallant soldiers who paid the supreme price in the line of duty,” the statement read.
“The burial, held at the Maimalari Cantonment Cemetery in Maiduguri, Borno State, was marked by deep sorrow, honour, and reflection.”
The military reiterated that the sacrifices of its personnel remain central to Nigeria’s ongoing fight against insurgency, particularly in the North-East region, where security forces continue to confront extremist groups.
It stressed that the legacy of the fallen soldiers would endure as a powerful symbol of duty, courage, and patriotism. According to the Army, their bravery serves as a reminder of the risks faced daily by troops working to safeguard the nation’s territorial integrity and protect civilians.
The ceremony concluded with a renewed commitment by the Armed Forces to sustain efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability across the country, even as the nation continues to mourn the loss of some of its finest defenders.
