The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has strongly condemned the violent assault on one of its officers by a commercial bus driver during an enforcement operation at Ojota Interchange, Lagos.
The incident involved a painted Caravelle GL Volkswagen commercial bus with registration number EKY 693 YK. The vehicle was intercepted for violating traffic regulations along the Ojota–Ketu corridor, where it was observed operating with its passenger door left open while fully loaded with commuters, thereby endangering passengers and other road users.
According to the Authority, upon being stopped on the main carriageway, the driver resisted arrest and attempted to flee by mounting the road median in a bid to escape. However, the vehicle developed a mechanical fault and became immobilised, foiling his attempt to abscond.
In a sudden escalation of violence, the driver allegedly grabbed a broken bottle from inside the bus and attacked the enforcement officers, stabbing one officer in the fingers of his right hand. The attack caused severe fractures and significant blood loss before the suspect fled the scene.
The vehicle was immediately impounded in accordance with existing traffic laws. The injured officer was swiftly taken to a medical facility, where he underwent emergency surgery. Two fingers required operative reconstruction due to the severity of the injuries sustained. He is currently under close medical supervision and receiving adequate care.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the incident as a disturbing and unacceptable act of violence against a public officer carrying out his lawful duty. He confirmed that the matter has been reported to the Police for thorough investigation, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend and prosecute the fleeing suspect.
Mr. Bakare-Oki warned that any attack on traffic enforcement personnel will be met with firm legal action. He also urged commercial transport operators to comply with traffic regulations and avoid actions that endanger lives.
LASTMA reiterated its commitment to maintaining order, discipline, and smooth traffic flow across Lagos State, assuring residents that enforcement operations will continue in the interest of public safety.
