The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Governor Biodun Oyebanji, winner of the Ekiti State governorship election held on Saturday.
Oyebanji secured re-election after polling 319,224 votes, defeating his closest challengers, Olumayokun Oluyede of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 40,533 votes, and Dare Bejide of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), who scored 12,872 votes.
The Returning Officer for the election and Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Prof. Adenike Oladiji, announced the results in the early hours of Sunday at the INEC headquarters on Iyin Road, Ado-Ekiti.
Declaring the result, Oladiji said:
“Therefore, I, Prof. Adenike Oladiji, the Returning Officer for the 2026 Ekiti Governorship Election, hereby declare that Oyebanji Abiodun Abayomi, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is duly elected and returned as the winner of the election.”
According to INEC, there are 988,251 registered voters in the state, while 384,940 voters were accredited. A total of 382,109 votes were cast, out of which 375,777 were valid.
Interestingly, the PDP candidate, Olumayokun Oluyede, who hails from Efon-Alaaye in Efon Local Government Area, lost his home council to the APC. In Efon LGA, Oyebanji polled 8,742 votes against the PDP candidate’s 2,051 votes, while the ADC secured 201 votes.
