Convicted kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, popularly known as Evans, has appealed for mercy, telling the court that he has changed and is ready to make amends for his past crimes.
Evans, who was once notorious for masterminding high-profile kidnappings across Lagos and other parts of the country, made the plea while addressing the court during a recent hearing. He said he has undergone a transformation during his years behind bars and is now remorseful for the pain he caused his victims and their families.
According to him, he is willing to sell some of his properties, including trucks allegedly acquired before his arrest, to raise funds to compensate those he wronged. He urged the court to consider his offer as proof of his sincerity and grant him freedom or reduce his sentence.
Evans was arrested in 2017 by operatives of the Nigeria Police and later convicted for multiple kidnapping charges. His arrest marked the end of a reign of terror that saw several businessmen abducted and huge ransoms paid for their release.
During the proceedings, he told the court that prison had changed his mindset and that he has reflected deeply on his actions. He said he now desires to live a lawful life and contribute positively to society if given another chance.
Prosecutors, however, maintained that the severity of his crimes should not be overlooked, noting the trauma and financial losses suffered by victims.
The court is expected to rule on his appeal in due course, as the case continues to draw public attention across the country.
