The Federal Government has announced the introduction of a strict “No Certification, No Entry” policy for all imported vehicles, covering both brand-new and used (tokunbo) cars, as part of efforts to enhance road safety and eliminate substandard automobiles from Nigerian roads.
The directive falls under the Standard Organisation of Nigeria–National Automotive Design and Development Council (SON-NADDC) Vehicle Conformity Assessment Programme (VCAP). Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, John Enoh, confirmed that any vehicle that fails to meet the required certification standards will be denied entry into the country, seized, or subjected to sanctions.
According to the government, the policy takes immediate effect and will be jointly enforced by the Nigeria Customs Service, the Central Bank of Nigeria, and the Federal Road Safety Corps.
Officials say the move is aimed at strengthening regulatory compliance, improving road safety, and curbing the influx of unsafe and substandard vehicles into the country.
