A recent video shared by Ediale J Ediale Sense TV has gone viral on social media, showcasing the Esan people of Edo State, Nigeria, and their revered traditional rulers taking a strong stand against what they describe as “cultural disorder.
In the video, which has attracted numerous views and reactions, Esan monarchs are seen dressed in full royal regalia as they reaffirm their commitment to preserving the rich cultural heritage and traditions of Esanland.
There were powerful declarations from Esan Royal Majesties and several high-profile figures denouncing acts and behaviors that undermine the traditional values of the Esan people.
The monarchs emphasized the importance of upholding indigenous practices and customs, especially in the face of modern influences that they believe threaten the integrity of their culture. One issue raised was that for many years, the Oba of Benin reportedly stopped paying homage to some Esan kings.
As a result, the Esan monarchs declared a new cultural directive: from henceforth, whenever Esan people are gathered and a plate of kolanut is presented, no Benin individual should be invited to break it (as was formerly the practice). Instead, the responsibility of breaking the kolanut should rest with an Esan king, Esan chief, or the most senior Esan person present.
The great people of Esanland and their Royal Majesties say no to cultural disorder in Esanland,” the leaders declared.
This resolution reflects a united commitment by Esan kings and traditional leaders to protect and promote Esan identity, heritage, and pride.
