The Edo State Government has issued a 21-day ultimatum to individuals allegedly residing within restricted public infrastructure, warning them to vacate the area or face enforcement measures.
“We have given them 21 days to go and look for a house… You cannot be living inside the moat,” a government official stated.
The government also raised concerns over increasing cases of vandalism in public schools, citing incidents at Fabiyi Akpata Primary School where chairs and roofing materials were reportedly stolen and sold.
“They’ve sold all the chairs, sold the roofing sheets,” the official lamented.
Authorities further warned scrap dealers in the state to take responsibility for the activities of their members, urging them to contribute to the repair of damaged public facilities or risk losing their operational rights.
Responding to the concerns, the Chairman of the Scrap Dealers Association in Edo State, Alhaji Abbas Garuba, said the association had introduced measures to regulate its members and curb illegal activities.
“We have given working hours to our members—7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and Saturdays. Anyone operating outside this time is not from us,” he said.
Garuba added that members had also been barred from operating on Sundays, noting that most theft incidents were often recorded on that day.
The Edo State Government reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order, assuring residents that law-abiding individuals, regardless of origin, remain welcome in the state.
