Tragedy struck at the Alapoka axis of the Papalanto–Ilaro Road, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, as a Dangote Cement truck crushed five people to death.
The spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incident on Saturday.
According to Akinbiyi, the accident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Friday. He stated that the truck lost its brakes and rammed into a tricycle conveying five passengers, all of whom died on the spot.
The vehicles involved were an unregistered tricycle and a Dangote truck with registration number GRZ 767 XA.
“A fatal road traffic accident occurred at Alapoka Village on the Papalanto–Ilaro Road around 8:25 p.m.,” Akinbiyi said. “The truck lost its brakes and rammed into a tricycle conveying five persons. Sadly, all five passengers died instantly. According to eyewitnesses, the truck driver failed to notice he had collided with the tricycle until its tyres crushed the vehicle and its occupants.”
Upon receiving the report, the Acting TRACE Head, Adedayo Omonayajo, alongside the Ilaro Divisional Commander, Salako Idowu, led a rescue team to the scene.
However, Akinbiyi revealed that the team was nearly attacked by angry residents, but timely intervention by the Amotekun Corps helped restore calm.
The remains of the victims were evacuated and taken to the morgue by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
This incident adds to a growing list of fatal accidents involving Dangote trucks. Recently, reality TV star Phyna raised concerns after one of the company’s trucks reportedly killed her sister.
