The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Niger/Kogi Area Command, has intensified efforts to promote personnel welfare through diabetes awareness and fire safety training for officers and men of the command.
The programme, held on Monday, October 26, 2026, at the Command Conference Room in Minna, Niger State, was organised under the leadership of the Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller S. Nwankwegu.
The initiative underscores the command’s commitment to improving officers’ health, strengthening workplace safety and enhancing operational effectiveness through preventive education and continuous learning.
The diabetes awareness session was facilitated by the Medical Officer of the Command Clinic, Assistant Comptroller of Customs L. Alfred, while Assistant Comptroller of Fire H. Zakariya delivered the fire safety lecture.
During the diabetes awareness session, officers were educated on the nature of diabetes, its risk factors, warning signs, possible complications and preventive measures.
The facilitator emphasised the importance of regular medical check-ups, healthy eating habits, consistent physical activity, weight management and early medical intervention.
Officers were also encouraged to take personal responsibility for their health, with emphasis on the role of early detection and proper management in reducing the risk of serious complications associated with diabetes.
The fire safety lecture focused on identifying potential fire hazards, preventing outbreaks, responding appropriately to emergencies and protecting lives and property.
Participants received guidance on electrical safety, the proper handling of combustible materials, the safe use of firefighting equipment and the prompt reporting of potential fire hazards.
The session also stressed the need for vigilance and strict compliance with safety procedures in offices, residential quarters and other command facilities.
The initiative reflects the leadership’s recognition that personnel welfare is an essential component of effective service delivery. By prioritising health education and workplace safety, the command aims to foster a culture of prevention, preparedness, discipline and shared responsibility.
Officers were urged to apply the knowledge acquired by adopting healthier lifestyles, seeking timely medical attention, observing fire safety precautions and remaining alert to potential hazards.
The command further emphasised that protecting personnel and safeguarding government property are collective responsibilities that contribute to efficient operations.
The Niger/Kogi Area Command expressed appreciation to the resource persons for their professional contributions and reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining programmes that promote personnel welfare, strengthen institutional capacity and maintain a safe and productive working environment.
