A Federal High Court in Osogbo, Osun State, has ordered the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to arrest the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, over alleged contempt of court.
The directive follows INEC’s purported failure to comply with a court ruling in favour of the Action Alliance (AA).
The Action Alliance (AA) had approached the court seeking recognition of all its state chairmen elected under the leadership of Adekunle Rufai Omoaje.
Presiding Judge, Justice Funmilola Demi-Ajayi, faulted INEC for failing to comply with an earlier valid judgment and ordered Prof. Mahmood Yakubu to reinstate the names of the affected chairmen on the INEC portal within seven days.
She also imposed a N100,000 fine on the INEC Chairman and warned that failure to comply with the court’s directive would lead to his immediate arrest by the Inspector-General of Police.
However, the court had earlier affirmed the validity of the convention that produced Adekunle Rufai Omoaje as the National Chairman of the Action Alliance (AA).
Justice Funmilola Demi-Ajayi noted that the convention was conducted in line with the party’s constitution and the provisions of the Electoral Act, and was duly monitored by INEC.
