President Bola Tinubu has ordered the suspension of the cashless payment system at airport toll gates across the country following widespread gridlock that has caused many passengers to miss their flights.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced the directive on Wednesday after the Federal Executive Council meeting held at the State House, Abuja.
According to the minister, the President expressed deep concern over the hardship the system was causing Nigerians, particularly travelers who were unable to catch their flights due to heavy congestion at airport toll points.
“Mr. President was very concerned about the welfare of Nigerians and the fact that most Nigerians were losing their flights. Out of empathy, he directed today that we should suspend the present system because it creates a lot of gridlock, and Nigerians are suffering as a result of it,” Keyamo said.
He explained that the immediate return to the previous payment structure would remain in place while the government works on developing a more efficient and seamless system.
Keyamo added that the decision was primarily aimed at addressing the persistent traffic congestion at the Lagos and Abuja airport toll gates, which has significantly disrupted passenger movement in recent weeks.
