Leaders and supporters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) staged a large demonstration in Abuja on Wednesday, protesting recent decisions by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which they claim undermine democratic principles and the party’s internal leadership structure.
Prominent political figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, were among those present at the rally, lending their voices to the growing discontent within the party.
The protest, tagged “Occupy INEC,” drew a significant crowd of party loyalists and civil society supporters, who marched peacefully while calling for transparency, fairness, and adherence to democratic norms by the electoral body. Demonstrators carried placards with various inscriptions criticizing INEC’s actions and demanding a review of the decisions affecting the ADC.
Addressing the crowd, party leaders accused INEC of interfering in internal party affairs and called on the commission to uphold its constitutional mandate as an impartial electoral umpire. They warned that continued actions perceived as biased could erode public trust in Nigeria’s electoral system.
The rally remained largely peaceful, with security personnel deployed across key areas in Abuja to maintain order and prevent any breakdown of law and order.
As of the time of filing this report, INEC had not issued an official response to the protest or the allegations raised by the ADC leadership.
