Some people serve quietly, consistently and selflessly, yet the impact of their service speaks loudly. DST Anifa Bello Abiodun is one of such public servants whose years of dedication to traffic management and service to humanity have earned her widespread respect and recognition.
For many years, Anifa was a familiar and respected face in traffic management in Abeokuta, Ogun State, where she distinguished herself through discipline, commitment, humility, patience and a strong sense of responsibility.
Her dedication to duty has not gone unnoticed. Over the years, government agencies, professional associations, community groups and individuals have recognised and celebrated her contributions to public service.
Her career is particularly remarkable for the dignity and professionalism she maintained even in difficult circumstances and situations involving provocation.
A Testimony to Courage and Professionalism
One incident that remains a remarkable testimony to Anifa’s character occurred during the tenure of the late Inspector-General of Police, IGP Solomon Arase.
While on traffic duty at the NNPC Junction in Abeokuta, Anifa reportedly had an encounter with a senior police officer whose vehicle was approaching from the Okemosan axis. According to the account, Anifa explained that she was unaware the officer was waiting in the queue and was therefore unable to allow him immediate passage through his lane.
The situation later escalated when the officer allegedly parked his vehicle some distance away, changed into mufti and returned to the scene, where he slapped Anifa.
The incident was witnessed by prominent Ogun indigenes and journalists who were returning from an assignment at the Ogun State Police Command Headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta.
The matter was subsequently brought to the attention of the then Inspector-General of Police, late IGP Solomon Arase, who ordered an investigation. The officer was queried and was eventually sanctioned with a reduction in rank.
The incident attracted public reaction and condemnation, particularly because Anifa was widely regarded as having remained professional in the discharge of her duties. More importantly, her conduct throughout the episode demonstrated the discipline, patience and composure for which she had become known.
A Police Officer Who Put Service First
During my time as the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Ogun State, I had the opportunity to observe Anifa’s conduct for almost a decade.
Throughout that period, she consistently demonstrated professionalism and respect for members of the public. She never allowed provocation to compromise her responsibilities or her relationship with motorists and other road users.
Her humility, patience, decency and commitment to duty distinguished her among those involved in traffic management in the state.
Anifa represents the kind of police officer and public servant that society should celebrate. Her years of service, patriotism and commitment to traffic management have made her a role model and an inspiration to many.
Retirement Is Not the End of Service
While retirement may mark the end of her active service, it should not mark the end of her relevance to society.
Her wealth of experience, knowledge of traffic management and understanding of human relations remain valuable assets that could continue to benefit Ogun State and the wider society.
I therefore appeal to the government, institutions and good people of Ogun State to continue to recognise, celebrate and honour DST Anifa Bello Abiodun for her selfless service to the state and humanity.
Anifa, I commend you. I celebrate you. I pray that Almighty God will continue to be with you, preserve you and grant you many more years of good health, happiness and fulfilment.
Congratulations on your retirement.
The Nigeria Police Force and the good people of Ogun State will certainly miss your active service. You have made the Force and your gender proud through your commitment, resilience and professionalism.
I remain optimistic that Ogun State will find ways to continue benefiting from your wealth of experience and dedication.
